Major Update Beta Test

Comment Views: 1

Greetings, Scientists!

Today, we are thrilled to roll out a substantial visual and performance update currently live on the Black Mesa Public Beta Branch! The development team has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to optimize facility-wide performance, elevate the overall graphical fidelity, and introduce a completely redesigned user interface.

Optimized Performance

We have implemented sweeping performance enhancements across a multitude of environments.

Players can look forward to higher frame rates and significantly smoother gameplay, particularly in resource-heavy sequences such as the Xen chapters.

Next-Generation Reflections: Parallax Corrected Cubemaps

We are integrating Parallax Corrected Cubemaps (PCCs), a cutting-edge rendering technique that dramatically enhances surface reflections throughout the facility.

Previously, the engine relied on standard cubemaps—capturing the surrounding environment from six distinct angles, stitching them into a unified 360-degree panorama, and applying it as a static texture onto surfaces.

PCCs elevate this system by projecting those reflections onto a localized virtual bounding box, such as an individual room or corridor. As you navigate the environment, the reflections dynamically adjust relative to your perspective, delivering a remarkably immersive and convincing visual experience.

Enhanced Lighting Models

Our team has overhauled the baked lighting architecture while squashing several persistent dynamic lighting bugs. Key improvements include:

  • Richer and more accurate bounce lighting.
  • Upgraded lighting parameters for static props, ensuring they integrate seamlessly into their surroundings.
  • Outdoor image-based lighting to vastly improve ambient indirect illumination.
  • Refined dynamic lighting passing through transparent materials, alongside numerous bug fixes.
  • Corrections to normal maps suffering from inverted green channels, which previously caused unnatural lighting artifacts.
  • And a host of additional tweaks under the hood!

All-New UI with Comprehensive Controller Support

We are proud to unveil a sleek, lightning-fast, and streamlined menu system for Black Mesa! Over the years, we have carefully reviewed your feedback, bug reports, and frequent requests for native controller compatibility and a snappier interface. This overhauled UI is tailor-made to eliminate clutter, save time, and streamline navigation. Best of all, it offers full, seamless support for keyboards, mice, traditional gamepads, and the Steam Controller.

We’re Waiting for YOU in the Test Chamber

To ensure thorough testing and methodical refinement, these updates are rolling out to the Black Mesa Beta Branch in chapter bundles.

The team has already addressed countless issues, but we need your help in the beta phase to keep an eye out for the following:

  • Unexpected crashes, visual artifacts, or regressions.
  • Specific zones experiencing unexpected performance dips.
  • Locations where the new reflection mapping appears unnatural.
  • General user experience feedback regarding the UI and Steam Deck.
  • Any other anomalies you encounter during your playthrough.
