An August 2024 Black Mesa announcement paired a short Steam sale with HECU Collective’s new trailer for Focal Point, chapter five of the Black Mesa: Blue Shift fan remake. The sale ended on August 29, and Focal Point later released on November 17, placing the August trailer before the finished chapter release.

What the August trailer announced

HECU Collective used the trailer to show Barney Calhoun’s journey moving into Xen. Focal Point is part of Black Mesa: Blue Shift, a fan-made reinterpretation of Gearbox’s 2001 Half-Life expansion built for Black Mesa. It is not an official Valve remake or a separate sequel to Crowbar Collective’s main campaign.

The August announcement also promoted Black Mesa at a temporary discount from August 24 through August 29. That price and deadline have expired. Current ownership requirements and discounts are listed on Steam.

Focal Point later became playable

On November 17, 2024, the Black Mesa developers reported that HECU Collective had released Focal Point. The chapter took Barney into Xen and arrived with fixes and feature updates for the earlier Blue Shift material. Players can obtain the free project through its Steam Workshop page, but Black Mesa itself is required.

How the mod relates to the original Blue Shift

The project retells the security guard’s perspective on the Black Mesa incident using the environments and systems of the modern Black Mesa remake. HECU Collective expands and reinterprets portions of the 2001 campaign rather than reproducing every scene unchanged. Focal Point specifically gives Xen a much larger role than the brief border-world sequence remembered from the original expansion.

Installation and update checks

Steam Workshop subscriptions can update automatically, while a ModDB installation may require manual file handling. Players should follow the current instructions on the chosen distribution page, avoid mixing incompatible packages and confirm that Black Mesa itself is updated. Developer release notes supersede troubleshooting suggestions in Workshop comments.
