Street Fighter 1994 Movie Now Streaming Free on Tubi and Pluto TV
Early reactions to the new Street Fighter movie are rough. The film sits at 45% on Rotten Tomatoes and has a 44 score on Metacritic. Polygon called it an “incoherent, irredeemable mess” that flounders for an overlong two-hour runtime and ends in an anticlimax. The action scenes are reportedly solid, but they underuse the characters’ superhuman abilities. The most consistent praise goes to David Dastmalchian’s deliciously campy performance as M. Bison.
Maybe you want a bad live-action Street Fighter movie with a great M. Bison, and you’d rather stay home. The 1994 Street Fighter is streaming for free on Tubi and Pluto TV.
Critics and audiences both panned the Jean-Claude Van Damme picture on release. They called it goofy and unfaithful to the source material. It still earned $99.4 million at the box office on a $35 million budget. Its main redeeming quality is Raul Julia’s take on M. Bison. He gave the villain a gravitas that helped turn the movie into a cult classic.
The clearest difference between the 2026 film and the 1994 version is how the characters look and act. The new movie appears to go out of its way to portray them in a more “lore-accurate” way. Critics dug into it for what they described as emotionally empty fan service. Series die-hards may feel differently. They may simply enjoy watching Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li punch guys while looking like their counterparts in the games.
The filmmakers clearly aimed to appeal to the fighting game community. Cameos include EVO winners and commentators Justin Wong and Michael “Yipes” Mendoza, along with YouTuber and competitive fighting game player Maximilian Christiansen (Maximilian Dood). Based on early screenings, the movie has an 82% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Have there been other Street Fighter movies?
Besides the two live-action films, there is Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. The anime also came out in 1994 and is far more niche, but it was arguably better received. It holds an 80% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, though from a tiny sample of five reviews. It is also free to stream right now on Pluto TV. If you want a “good” Street Fighter movie, it’s probably your best bet.
