Stranger Than Heaven Will Be Larger Than Expected, Says Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio Head

The game launches on January 15, 2027, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama shared details about the action-adventure game Stranger Than Heaven. The narrative expanded significantly during development, resulting in a much larger story than the team initially planned.

Yokoyama told Media that the staff did not calculate the exact volume of the project. He remains confident that the final product is substantial, particularly regarding the main storyline, which grew throughout the production cycle.

The map sizes in Stranger Than Heaven compare to those in the Yakuza series. Each historical era features a unique map built to scale without artificial adjustments. Players will find more buildings with explorable interiors, but the lack of modern skyscrapers keeps the overall world size consistent with previous studio projects.

Yokoyama stressed that Stranger Than Heaven is an original intellectual property unconnected to Yakuza. The game features a new interface, updated controls, and reworked combat mechanics. Side content also follows a different structure, with stories that likely carry a more serious tone than those found in past series.

The team included Play Spots, though fewer than before. Yokoyama attributed this to the historical setting, which lacks the corporate collaborations that typically populated such activities in Yakuza.

Protagonist Makoto Daito sneaks onto a ship bound for Japan following his mother’s death. During the voyage, he meets Orpheus, played by Snoop Dogg, and Yu Shinze. Music business operations eventually link these characters, serving as a core part of the story.
