Stephen A. Smith Says Travis Kelce Could Be Nearing Retirement as Personal and Team Priorities Shift
Published December 9, 2025

Discussion about when Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce might retire has intensified in recent months. Speaking to People on December 9, 2025, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith suggested that Kelce’s growing off-field commitments — including his engagement to Taylor Swift — combined with the Chiefs’ uneven stretch this season, make retirement a realistic possibility in the near future.
Smith pointed to both Kelce’s personal life and the team’s form as reasons the veteran might step away. While acknowledging Kelce’s exceptional talent and championship résumé, Smith observed that time eventually catches up with everyone, and now could be an opportune moment for Kelce to explore other avenues.
Beyond football, Smith noted that Kelce would have abundant opportunities in entertainment and media — an appealing prospect for a player already branching into acting and high-profile projects such as Happy Gilmore 2. Smith also referenced Kelce’s relationship with Swift as a factor that could influence a decision to reprioritize life off the field.
Billboard has contacted Kelce’s representatives and the Kansas City Chiefs for comment.
At present, the Chiefs sit at 6–7, most recently falling to the Houston Texans on December 7, 2025 — a game attended by Swift alongside friend Selena Gomez. That slump contrasts sharply with the recent peak when Kansas City captured its second straight Super Bowl title in 2024; the team returned to the Super Bowl in 2025 but were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Kelce, a three-time Super Bowl champion, is 36 years old and in his 13th NFL season. His older brother, Jason Kelce, retired after 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024.
