Stellar Blade Was Nearly Canceled Before PlayStation Intervened
Stellar Blade was on the verge of cancellation due to a critical financial situation at Shift Up. Sony’s interest in an early prototype helped the game secure publishing support and reach the global market.
Studio head Hyung-tae Kim shared in an interview that during one of the company’s hardest periods, it only had enough money left for three months of salaries. Investors and major publishers did not believe in the prospects of an expensive single-player AAA action game from South Korea, where the market is primarily focused on mobile online games.
Some financial partners even offered a significantly higher valuation for the studio if the developers completely canceled the project and focused on safer directions.
Constant rejections made Kim doubt whether such an ambitious console project had any future at all. The turning point came when an early prototype caught the interest of Shuhei Yoshida from Sony Interactive Entertainment. This led to a publishing agreement and helped Shift Up continue development.

Now the studio is preparing a version of Stellar Blade for Nintendo Switch 2 and working on a direct sequel, Stellar Blade: Blood Rain.
