Starfield’s Second Story DLC to Feature a Killer Robot Armada
Bethesda Game Studios has officially unveiled Terran Armada, a significant new narrative expansion for Starfield centered on a relentless legion of lethal automatons. Scheduled for a global rollout on April 7, the DLC arrives alongside the highly anticipated debut of Starfield on PlayStation 5, ending the title’s two-year tenure as an Xbox console exclusive.
As the second major post-launch journey for the space-faring RPG, Terran Armada follows in the footsteps of 2024’s Shattered Space. That previous expansion delved into the lore of House Va’ruun, a faction of religious zealots dedicated to a deity known as the Great Serpent. However, Shattered Space was met with a lukewarm reception, as players and critics alike took issue with its $30 price tag, limited geographical scope, and surprisingly brief campaign.
In a departure from the singular focus of its predecessor, Terran Armada introduces a systemic threat that spans the entire Settled Systems. A hostile human faction, commanding an army of robotic killers, has begun launching “incursions” across various star systems, and it falls to the player to thwart their advance. Beyond the new storyline, the expansion enriches the gameplay experience with an array of fresh weaponry, specialized starships, new characters, and diverse enemy types.
“Following the launch and leading up to Shattered Space, the prevailing sentiment was a desire for a more traditional, handcrafted Bethesda environment—a place players could truly inhabit,” explained Tim Lamb, Starfield’s lead creative producer, during a press event attended by Polygon. “After delivering that experience, we recognized a new demand for content that felt truly cosmic in scale—something that resonates across the entire galaxy.”
Bethesda has integrated Terran Armada to work in tandem with the “Free Lanes” update, a free patch launching simultaneously on April 7. This update finally implements the ability to pilot ships directly between planets, though the invasion forces of the Terran Armada add a dangerous layer of unpredictability to travel—addressing long-standing criticisms regarding the perceived emptiness of the game’s galactic map.
“Previously, ship combat was often an optional encounter; you could simply engage your grav drive and warp away,” Lamb noted. “The Terran Armada now utilizes technology capable of neutralizing that escape option within a certain radius. Players must now decide whether to risk tactical engagements or consult the star map to bypass occupied systems entirely.”
Terran Armada is included as a standard feature for owners of the Starfield Premium Edition (currently priced at $69.99) and will be available as a standalone purchase for $9.99. To access the new content, players must advance through the core narrative until they reach The Lodge.
