Stardew Valley creator shares detailed update on his next game

Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone, the visionary behind Stardew Valley, readily admits that he likely shared the news of his next project a bit too early. Although Haunted Chocolatier was officially unveiled in 2021—with initial work beginning a year prior—the title remains firmly in development five years later with no concrete launch date in sight. While Barone acknowledges the frustration that comes with such a lengthy wait, he maintains that the extended development timeline is essential for his creative goals.

“I am fully aware that this is taking quite some time,” Barone noted in a recent blog post. “It feels somewhat redundant to keep reiterating this, but that is simply the state of things.” His comments echo a previous update from this past January, where he similarly reflected on the protracted development cycle, musing that perhaps an earlier announcement was a strategic error.

Regarding why the project has surpassed the five-year mark, Barone explained that he is constantly refining the game’s intricate core mechanics.

“Elements that players will engage with frequently must feel perfect,” he stated. “They need to be seamless, precise, intuitive, rewarding, and visually polished.”

Much like its predecessor, Haunted Chocolatier is a charming life-simulation game centered on entrepreneurship and fostering connections within a local community. However, Barone describes this new title as possessing a more robust “action-RPG” focus, with combat playing a larger role. Naturally, the gameplay loop shifts from farming to the management of a chocolate shop. Both titles maintain a cohesive visual identity, sharing the signature pixel-art, top-down perspective fans have grown to love.

A significant portion of his recent efforts has gone into the game’s recipe book, which acts as a central hub for player interaction.

“This is a menu you’ll be opening often, so the design has to be flawless,” the developer emphasized. This involves obsessive attention to detail, such as optimizing click counts and refining the clarity of displayed information. Barone’s goal is to ensure the interface is not merely functional, but inherently satisfying.

“If all of those requirements are met, the player is comfortable browsing the recipe book,” Barone wrote. “But I want to provide more than just comfort. I want the experience to be delightful.”

Even as he pours his energy into polishing Haunted Chocolatier, Barone hasn’t stepped away from Stardew Valley. Earlier this year, as the farming sim celebrated its 10th anniversary, he provided a glimpse into the substantial 1.7 update. While there is no release window for this update either, it is set to introduce two additional marriage candidates. Furthermore, Barone has hinted at future possibilities, including a “Stardew Classic” project or perhaps a formal sequel. For now, it seems fans of both franchises will need to exercise a bit more patience.

Barone concluded his latest update with a characteristically humble sentiment: “As always, I am deeply grateful for your continued patience.”
