Disney and Lucasfilm chose Jon Watts to direct an upcoming Star Wars movie reportedly continuing the Skywalker Saga. Jon Watts is best known for directing the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man trilogy.

What we’ve learned about Star Wars Episode 10

On Sept. 26, The Hollywood Reporter and Knight Edge Media reported that Jon Watts would direct the first Star Wars movie belonging to the next phase of a potential new Skywalker Saga. The film is reportedly part of a trilogy Simon Kinberg is writing. Simon Kinberg wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, Days of Future Past, and Apocalypse, and he directed Dark Phoenix. Disney has not fully greenlit the movie yet, so plot details remain unavailable.

A potential Episode 10 is far along in development, and Disney knows Jon Watts well. Jon Watts helped fold Spider-Man into the MCU by directing Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home. Afterward, Jon Watts worked on Star Wars by helping create Star Wars: Skeleton Crew for Disney Plus, which convinced Lucasfilm to hire Jon Watts for a Skywalker Saga movie.

Production confirmation for Episode 10 is still pending. Ever since Star Wars: Episode 9 – The Rise of Skywalker wrapped up the overarching narrative in 2019, Lucasfilm has hesitated to continue the flagship movie series. Multiple projects entered development and failed to materialize over the subsequent seven years, with most new Star Wars releases arriving as Disney Plus shows or video games.

Rey Skywalker with some very blue color grading

The Mandalorian and Grogu debuted in theaters in May, but the film underperformed expectations at the box office. Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling’s Star-Wars: Starfighter premieres next May and will test the commercial viability of a Star Wars movie outside the Skywalker Saga. If that film underperforms, Disney and Lucasfilm may turn to a hypothetical Star Wars Episode 10 to support the franchise.
