Star of HBO’s New Harry Potter Series Talks About Letter from Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe has passed the torch to the new actor portraying Harry Potter.

Dominic McLaflin, who will play Harry Potter in HBO’s upcoming series, described the moment he received a letter from Daniel Radcliffe. The actor said the note was handed to him on a train while he was traveling home to Glasgow.

In an interview on the BBC’s Saturday Mash-Up! Live, McLaflin said he was taken aback by the signature “Dan R.” at the end of the letter, but tried to remain composed since he was in a public setting.

Earlier, Daniel Radcliffe confirmed that he had written McLaflin a few warm lines, wishing him a “wonderful time” on set. In that gesture he symbolically handed the role to the next generation of actors.

Speaking about the production, McLaflin said filming has been “remarkable”: “Everything is going brilliantly. I’ve gotten on well with everyone, and I’m thrilled to be part of this team.”

Production began over the summer. More than 32,000 children auditioned for the roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione. The casting ultimately favored Dominic McLaflin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton. HBO presents the series as a full-scale adaptation of J. K. Rowling’s novels: each season will cover one book, allowing the inclusion of scenes and storylines that were omitted from the original films.

The first season is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
