Sony bets on expensive PS Plus tiers as Extra and Premium grow

Sony is shifting its PlayStation Plus strategy. The company is moving away from prioritizing growth for the base Essential tier to focus on the higher-priced Extra and Premium plans.

Management aims to boost engagement by expanding the content catalog and encouraging users to upgrade. Financial data shows that 38% of subscribers opted for Extra or Premium in the 2024 fiscal year, up from 30% in 2022.

PlayStation Plus drove record profitability for the gaming division. Churn rates reached a five-year low despite price hikes implemented in 2023.

Still, some users remain dissatisfied. Critics point to rising costs, concerns over the catalog quality, and a shift from monthly major updates to smaller weekly content drops. These frequent, minor additions leave some players feeling that the updates lack impact.

Unlike Xbox Game Pass, Sony will not release its major titles on the service at launch. The company remains committed to positioning Extra and Premium as the primary value drivers for the PlayStation Plus ecosystem.
