Shotgun‑Wielding Drifter: Darkenstein 3D Hits Steam — Retro Shooter in the Spirit of DOOM and Wolfenstein
The genre’s classics continue to inspire creators.
Recently, publisher MicroProse Software released Darkenstein 3D on Steam, developed by Rowye.
It’s another retro shooter, drawing clear inspiration from genre-defining titles like Wolfenstein and DOOM:
Think of it as a tribute — a love letter to the games that shaped a generation, enhanced by a few of my modern touches. It’s demanding, fast-paced, and rewards skill, much like those old-school shooters.
The story centers on a “furious American drifter” stranded behind enemy lines, armed with a single shotgun. Set in 1940s Germany, the protagonist is undaunted by overwhelming odds and fights to free his captive canine companion, Günther.
The Darkenstein 3D page on Steam is available here. The game is free to download.
