San Francisco is preparing to bid a heartfelt farewell to one of its most cherished musical icons. This Saturday, Jan. 17, the city will host “Homecoming: Celebrating the Life of Bobby Weir,” a public tribute dedicated to the enduring influence and spirit of the legendary Grateful Dead co-founder.

The memorial gathering is scheduled to take place at Civic Center Plaza, with proceedings officially beginning at 3:45 p.m. ET. Organizers describe the event as an opportunity for the community to unite in honor of a man whose artistry and humanity resonated across generations. “Together, we will pay tribute to the community and collective heartbeat that he created,” a statement from the event planners read.

Weir, a visionary guitarist and a foundational architect of the jam-band movement, passed away last week at the age of 78 following a courageous battle with cancer and complications from underlying lung issues. His career spanned decades, from the psychedelic roots of the Grateful Dead to his later iterations with ensembles like Furthur and Dead & Company.

A Day of Remembrance, Not a Performance

While the event honors a musical titan, representatives have clarified that this is not a concert. There will be no live musical performances.
