The core of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope is built upon the enduring friction between two titanic powers: Duty and Freedom. These rival factions view the Zone through opposing lenses—one sees an existential threat that must be purged, while the other perceives it as a miraculous frontier for humanity to embrace. But how did this deep-seated enmity begin?
The Genesis of Conflict
The story traces back to Captain Tachenko, a military officer deployed into the heart of the Zone. Stunned by the anomalies and harrowing secrets hidden within, he concluded that the Zone was a cancer on the world that had to be eradicated at any cost. Though Tachenko eventually vanished, his crusade endured through his disciples, who militarized his ideals to form the faction known as Duty. Operating with iron-fisted discipline, they positioned themselves as the final bulwark against the Zone’s corruption.

Every dogma invites defiance. A stalker named Chekhov emerged with a radical counter-perspective, championing the exploration of the Zone for the benefit and expansion of human potential. He gathered like-minded spirits to form Freedom, a faction rooted in the concepts of liberty and egalitarianism. They viewed the Zone not as a monster to be slain, but as a territory to be understood. Their rapid growth cemented them as the second great power, and the inevitable clash between these two ideologies sparked a war that would define the Zone for decades.

To fully immerse yourself in the saga, the original trilogy is available via the Legends of the Zone bundle on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.
The Current State of Affairs
Set in 2021, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 finds our rival factions irrevocably changed by the passage of time and the shifting politics of the Zone.

Duty’s New Reality
The establishment of the Ward has effectively neutralized the traditional faction wars, forcing Duty to relocate from their stronghold in Rostok to the Cement Factory. While General Voronin may appear to have lost his edge under the current treaty, those who know his history understand that a veteran commander never truly lowers his guard.

Zulu Returns
Despite the current climate, loyalists remain. Zulu, the battle-hardened veteran from S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat, has been recalled by Voronin. Whatever circumstances drove him away, his return marks a pivotal moment for those still committed to the old ways of the shield.

Freedom’s Prosperity
Freedom is currently basking in a golden age. Under the stewardship of Miklukha—the architect of the “coupon” currency system—the faction is thriving. As trade floods into Rostok, Freedom has become a commercial powerhouse, proving that the Zone has much to offer to those willing to trade rather than fight.

Mavka
The Arena continues to be a brutal spectacle, masterfully narrated by Mavka. While she possesses a razor-sharp wit and a knack for providing commentary on the carnage below, her true motives remain hidden. She is increasingly drawn away from the limelight, pursuing mysterious, solitary expeditions into the unknown depths of the Zone.

Is the Cold War Heating Up?
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Cost of Hope is an expansive journey, offering dozens of hours of gameplay across iconic landscapes like the Iron Forest and the legendary CNPP. Beyond the new anomalies and locations, this expansion presents a complex, non-linear narrative where your choices dictate the future of the Zone. No single playthrough will reveal every secret; the path you choose will reshape the world.
