The developer has increased the maximum camera zoom-out distance and improved unit readability.

The creator of the real-time strategy game Dust Front RTS recently published a development diary discussing the demo update and the work that “was accomplished during [the author’s] absence from the internet space.”

The developer reminded players that a demo is simply a demonstration version of the game:

I would like to note that the demo serves an exclusively demonstrative purpose and you are playing it for free. I am writing this because, judging by some applications, this is not obvious to everyone from the definition itself.

The maximum camera zoom-out distance in Dust Front RTS was increased by nearly 2 times. To achieve this, the developer explained that extensive work was carried out to adapt the visuals to the new scale. He had to rewrite several key post-processing elements “so that small geometry would at least pretend to exist on the screen.” Players no longer need to hold down the left Alt key to zoom out, and the front line is displayed at the maximum view.

Because zooming out the camera aggravated the problem of unit readability, the Dust Front RTS developer decided to create a more explicit differentiation in sizes and showed several examples:

Super-heavy equipment was made larger to maintain scale on the screen, while smaller units and certain buildings were given icons of various orientations.

The screenshot below displays the symbols:

  • A circle with short lines represents an infantry reinforcement point.
  • Square corners highlight a flying unit.
  • A shield indicates medium combat vehicle equipment.
  • An armored repair and recovery vehicle (BREM) features a “repair sign”.
  • A small triangle represents an infantry squad.
  • A “sledgehammer” inside a square at the Supply Depot signifies that this building is a supply builder.
