Rockstar Games Reinstates Crunch Culture for GTA 6

In a candid discussion with Game Developer, three UK-based Rockstar Games staff members—all affiliated with the recently established Rockstar Games Workers Union—have offered a sobering assessment of the company’s internal climate. Their testimony suggests that the optimistic narrative of a reformed, healthy workplace, which management championed just a few years ago, is increasingly disconnected from the reality on the ground.

The Return of Crunch Culture

As the studio ramps up production for GTA 6, the familiar specter of mandatory overtime has resurfaced. This pressure is not confined to the UK; reports indicate that workload strain is a global issue. While leadership avoids the term “crunch”—maintaining that overtime is adequately compensated—employees argue that current pay structures fail to justify the grueling hours. Union organizers have also highlighted that under UK labor regulations, staff members maintain the legal right to decline overtime that exceeds 10 additional hours per week.

It is worth noting that these pressures are not distributed uniformly across the organization. Disparities between departments mean that some teams suffer under relentless schedules while others remain largely insulated, leaving many employees in the dark regarding the struggles of their peers in different branches.

Ambiguity in Compensation and Bonuses

The company’s bonus architecture continues to be a source of frustration, characterized by a lack of transparency and frequent, unexplained revisions. Consequently, many staff members find themselves falling short of their anticipated earnings. While the company implemented salary adjustments in October, workers remain skeptical, viewing these increases as a reactive measure to quell widespread outrage following recent layoffs rather than a sincere commitment to improving employee welfare.
