A remarkable community project has brought GTA: Vice City to yet another beloved classic system from the turn of the millennium.

The Nintendo GameCube, which defined sixth-generation gaming between 2001 and 2007, originally saw limited official backing from Rockstar Games with the release of Smuggler’s Run: Warzones—an upgraded and expanded iteration of Hostile Territory. Additionally, players utilizing the Game Boy Player peripheral could experience the handheld releases of GTA 1 and GTA 2 (for Game Boy Color) alongside GTA: Advance on their home screens. Although discussions once surrounded native ports for GTA 3 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, those plans were ultimately abandoned. Industry observers attribute this cancellation to the storage ceiling of the 1.46 GB Mini-DVD format, Nintendo’s conservative stance on explicit mature content, or lukewarm software sales across the ecosystem.

More than two decades later, the open-source reVC reverse-engineering project has finally achieved what once seemed impossible: bringing Tommy Vercetti’s sun-soaked criminal exploits to the GCN hardware. Nevertheless, early adopters should temper their expectations. The current release is in a decidedly experimental state, plagued by persistent crashes and stability hurdles. Significant optimization remains before it delivers a seamless playthrough, but this functional milestone represents a major technical achievement.

Curious players should note that this homebrew edition features tailored technical configurations to operate within the console’s architecture:

  • Rendering Resolution: 640×480p
  • Frame Rate: 60 FPS target
  • Asset Quality: High-resolution PC textures
  • Visual Fidelity: Full post-processing and dynamic effects enabled
  • Audio Sampling: 32 kHz output

Celebrating the accomplishment, enthusiastic fans have already designed authentic period-accurate box art and printable disc labels for physical display.
