While the gaming community remains in a state of heightened anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games has dropped an unexpected gift for those still navigating the streets of Los Santos on last-generation consoles.
Beginning June 18, owners of the PlayStation 4 or digital Xbox One editions of Grand Theft Auto V are eligible for a complimentary upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions. This development, confirmed via the official Rockstar Newswire, arrives alongside announcements for “The Kortz Center Heist,” a substantial new mission update for GTA Online scheduled to debut this July.
When the current-gen ports of GTA V originally launched on March 15, 2022, they were offered exclusively as a paid upgrade. This shift in policy provides a significant value boost, bringing modern enhancements—such as 4K resolution, HDR, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, superior draw distances, and buttery-smooth 60 frames-per-second gameplay—to a much wider player base. Additionally, PS5 users will benefit from immersive 3D audio and DualSense haptic feedback, with full support for transferring save progress from previous hardware.
PC enthusiasts can also take advantage of these visual and performance improvements by transitioning from the Legacy to the Enhanced edition at no additional cost. Furthermore, subscribers to GTA+ now gain full access to the Grand Theft Auto V story mode via the GTA+ Games Library.
With the release of Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon for November 19, this move encourages fans to revisit the classic title with modern fidelity. While we wait for more concrete details on the upcoming sequel, you can refresh your memory by watching the latest cinematic trailer from May 2025.
