While Rick and Morty concludes its ninth season on July 26, the wait for your next dose of imaginative animated sci-fi will be remarkably brief. Immediately following the finale, Adult Swim will debut President Curtis, a spin-off centered on U.S. President Andre Curtis (voiced by Keith David) as he defends the nation against an array of extraterrestrial and occult dangers. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming series and where to catch it.

Is prior knowledge of Rick and Morty required?

Although Rick and Morty make a brief appearance in the President Curtis premiere—mostly to deliver a meta-commentary on the spin-off trend and the longevity of their own series—this show carves its own path. Aside from Curtis, who long served as a prickly antagonist for Rick Sanchez, the spin-off introduces a distinct ensemble cast with fresh narratives. Notably, showrunner Dan Harmon has opted for a more empathetic portrayal of Curtis than fans might expect.

“He’s a much better person,” Harmon noted. “He’s motivated by duty rather than the metrics-driven desperation we see in the Rick and Morty universe, where he often sacrifices his integrity for clout.”

What is the premise of President Curtis?

If Rick and Morty functions as a family sitcom filtered through a Doctor Who lens, President Curtis acts as a workplace comedy inspired by The X-Files. Curtis is supported by a dynamic duo: his Chief of Staff, Banks (Stephanie Beatriz)—a cyborg who can upload new skill sets on demand—and his bodyguard, Special Agent O’Doyle (Jim Rash), a half-leprechaun operative capable of reading auras and wielding specialized anti-monster weaponry.

Harmon structured this trio to evoke the classic chemistry of the original Star Trek bridge crew, though he intentionally subverts traditional archetypes. Banks serves as the moral compass of the office, while O’Doyle holds a rigid, cynical stance toward magic and deception due to his supernatural heritage. At the center is Curtis: a divorced former Marine focused purely on securing the world’s safety.

“He’s an outsider who refuses to engage in the typical political theater,” says co-showrunner James Siciliano. “He isn’t playing 4D chess; he is strictly committed to the mission.”

While the team possesses advanced resources, they lack the multiversal god-like power of Rick Sanchez. They cannot simply jump to another reality when a situation turns dire. The pilot sees Curtis sparring with a clandestine CIA cover-up regarding the moon landing, with future episodes tackling everything from occult rituals at Camp David to diplomatic disputes with France over the Louisiana Purchase.

“It’s still wild, high-concept sci-fi, but with a more terrestrial focus,” Siciliano explains. “Rick and Morty thrives on a nihilistic, infinite-multiverse perspective, but this show is grounded. For Curtis, the stakes are very real and deeply personal.”

How to watch

President Curtis debuts on July 26 at 11:30 p.m. ET on Adult Swim, with episodes arriving on HBO Max the following day.
