Starting in January 2028, no other manufacturer will be able to produce media for the PS5 and PS6, which effectively halts physical game copies for these consoles.

Sony decided to stop producing physical media for PlayStation consoles, which has upset collectors. Despite player protests, the Japanese company continues its plan to close or convert its manufacturing plants.

Stopping disc production means not only a change in how games are distributed, but also an abandonment of traditional physical ownership in favor of digital distribution and cloud services.

Protecting a unique media format has always been an important part of combating piracy and controlling the market for console manufacturers. Without Sony’s permission and license, independent publishers could not release physical games for PlayStation.

After Sony completely closes its factories, no company will remain on the market with the necessary technology and rights to produce these discs. Starting in January 2028, no other company will be able to produce physical media for the PS5 and PS6.
