Project Hail Mary Author Andy Weir Still Wants to Write Star Trek

Sci-fi author Andy Weir has enjoyed a successful year thanks to the film adaptation of his novel Project Hail Mary. The movie stars Ryan Gosling and became a critical and commercial smash hit, earning awards buzz. Now Weir hopes that success might help him fulfill his dream of making a Star Trek series.

In an interview with Inverse, Weir declined to share his Star Trek idea when asked because he wants to pitch that again with everything changing. The recently completed merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Skydance is set to shake up the new company plans. Star Trek was already in flux since both current shows conclude next year and a film reboot is in the works. Changes at the studio provide Weir with a chance to get a second shot at making his show.

Weir shared that he pitched a Star Trek series back in March while appearing on the Critical Drinker podcast. He called the current run of Paramount shows led by executive producer Alex Kurtzman “shit” and said of Kurtzman, “He is a nice guy. But they didn’t accept my pitch so, you know, fuck ’em.” He later apologized to Kurtzman on Facebook. The author also revealed an idea for a Star Trek and Star Wars crossover called Star Star. Plot points would include Spock becoming a Force ghost after dying in The Wrath of Khan, Sulu gaining Jedi abilities, and McCoy entirely healing Darth Vader’s body.

What is the future of Star Trek?

Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy both end sometime in 2027. After that, television will have no Star Trek shows for the first time since Discovery began airing in 2017. That series ended a 12-year drought for the franchise, and fans hope the pattern will not repeat.

The film front has a bit more movement. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley helm a reboot, though progress has been slow. The pair revealed that their film draws heavy inspiration from Training Day and Crimson Tide, according to Polygon. The project focuses on all-new characters rather than familiar faces. The movie is in the writing phase, and a release date remains far off.
