Production Finally Begins on Apple’s Best Sci-Fi Series, Yet Fans Are Frustrated

Production for the third season of Severance has officially commenced. Director Ben Stiller and showrunner Dan Erickson shared a familiar corporate mantra on social media—“‘To return to work is to return home.’ – Kier Eagan”—accompanied by a snapshot of Mark S. and Helly R. racing through the labyrinthine corridors of Lumon Industries.

While this is undoubtedly welcome news for devotees of the acclaimed Apple TV+ sci-fi thriller, the prolonged hiatus leading up to this point remains a point of contention. The second season of Severance concluded on March 20, 2025, with a swift third-season renewal announced the very next day. Regrettably, that immediate greenlight did not translate into an expedited filming schedule.

Waiting has unfortunately become a hallmark of the Severance viewing experience. Audiences endured a staggering 35-month gap between the premieres of the first and second seasons. When Ben Stiller was previously pressed about whether viewers should brace for another agonizing three-year interim, he reassured fans, “Definitely not. No, the plan is not, and hopefully, we’ll be announcing what the plan is very soon.”

Despite those assurances, a closer look at the timeline suggests that the wait for season 3 will feel uncomfortably familiar. Stiller and Erickson previously noted that principal photography for the sophomore run spanned 168 days—roughly six months when accounting for weekends and pauses. Factoring in an estimated eight months for post-production and promotional rollout, season 3 likely won’t materialize until autumn 2027. That translates to an approximate 32-month drought since season 2 debuted. While marginally shorter than the 35-month chasm between seasons 1 and 2, it offers little comfort to an already weary fanbase. This recurring delay feels especially pronounced because, unlike season two—which suffered setbacks due to the 2023 WGA strikes—season three faces no such external disruptions.

Unsurprisingly, the community reaction has been largely skeptical.

“Looking forward to watching it in 2029,” one Reddit user quipped.

“This has got to be one of the best yet most frustrating shows to root for. It’s a phenomenal, high-concept premise backed by stellar acting, but good luck sustaining viewer engagement when multi-year gaps become the norm,” another commenter noted.
