Popular Tech Blogger Says Steam Machine Will Cost $700
Linus Sebastian had earlier proposed that Valve price the device at $500, but the suggestion was met with little enthusiasm within the company.
Well-known tech creator Linus Sebastian (Linus Tech Tips) expects the Steam Machine to debut at around $699.
Without access to Valve’s internal meetings it’s impossible to be certain. What they’ve told us is that they want their hardware operations to be sustainable. To me, that points to a $699.99 price tag unless the market shifts dramatically. It’s slightly above their present unit cost, but as initial investments are recovered and prices for memory and SSDs normalize, the margin should improve.
Linus believes that even at $699.99 the Steam Machine would remain a very attractive option.
Valve itself isn’t rushing to disclose a price for its gaming console. It’s likely the company will announce the Steam Machine’s cost closer to launch, similar to how Microsoft revealed the price for the ROG Ally X.
