During the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, Koei Tecmo and Game Freak unveiled their post-launch roadmap for Pokémon Pokopia. The highlight is a fresh biome, Bubbly Basin, debuting in August alongside a specialized “Dive” ability. This traversal mechanic promises to unlock a wealth of submerged secrets, hidden treasures, and aquatic habitats.

However, Pokopia faces a daunting design challenge: underwater levels are notoriously difficult to get right. From the infamous Water Temple in Ocarina of Time to the claustrophobic depths of Super Mario 64 or the clunky crossbow mechanics in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, history is littered with aquatic stages that prioritize frustration over fun. Players are often burdened by sluggish movement, suffocating time limits, and impaired visibility.

Granted, Pokémon Pokopia leans into the relaxed, cozy-sim genre, which may mitigate the punishing difficulty found in more action-heavy titles. Even so, if Bubbly Basin succumbs to the standard pitfalls of water-based gameplay, it risks feeling like a hollow, underwhelming addition compared to the rest of the game’s vibrant world.

Bubbly Basin appears to draw significant inspiration from Kanto’s Cerulean City. For this expansion to truly shine, it needs scale. Ideally, it should encompass landmarks like Routes 24 and 25, Bill's residence, and the elusive Cerulean Cave. Given that areas like Pewter, Saffron, and Vermilion City are already featured in the game, expanding into this iconic region feels like a logical progression, even if the geography remains a loose homage to the original generation.

To avoid a stale experience, the underwater mechanics shouldn't be confined solely to Bubbly Basin. Locations such as the Withered Wasteland and Bleak Beach are ocean-adjacent; integrating diving opportunities there would add meaningful depth to the world. If these regions remain empty, the game loses its charm. We need intricate caves and specialized habitats to keep exploration rewarding, rather than simply swimming through a barren, aesthetic-only void.

Regarding the "Dive" ability itself, I hope for an unlimited resource model. Much like the current movement abilities—Glide or Rollout—Dive should be a reliable tool. Constantly surfacing for air would be an exhausting chore that contradicts the serene nature of the game.

Finally, the developer should prioritize player freedom regarding species compatibility. If I want a fire-type like Charmander to reside alongside water-types in a submerged habitat, the game should allow it. Pokopia has been largely flexible with housing so far; maintaining that creative liberty would preserve the game’s whimsical, sandbox spirit.

While Pokopia is a delightful, charming experience, Bubbly Basin is a bold gamble. Mastering underwater gameplay is rarely a smooth process, but the promise of fresh content is hard to ignore. I, for one, am eagerly awaiting the chance to dive in, provided the developers prioritize player-friendly design over traditional water-level tropes.
