Peter Jackson Officially in Talks to Direct New Lord of the Rings Movie

For decades, director Peter Jackson has served as the primary architect behind the cinematic adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary fantasy works, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. While it seemed his journey through Middle-earth had concluded—save for his producing role on Andy Serkis’ upcoming The Hunt for Gollum—Jackson recently hinted at a potential return. In a conversation with Deadline, the filmmaker revealed he is exploring the possibility of adapting a J.R.R. Tolkien story that has yet to grace the big screen.

Jackson noted that there remains a wealth of untapped source material from the legendary author that would translate beautifully to film. This perspective stems from his recognition of the extensive literary legacy stewarded by J.R.R. Tolkien’s son, Christopher, who was instrumental in bringing volumes like The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales to publication.

Historically, however, the relationship between the Tolkien estate and Jackson’s cinematic vision was fraught with tension. Christopher Tolkien was famously vocal about his disdain for the director’s approach. In a candid interview with Le Monde, the younger Tolkien argued that the Lord of the Rings trilogy “eviscerated” the source material, transforming deep literature into “an action movie for young people.”

Given such harsh criticism, it was long assumed that the Tolkien estate would block any further cinematic endeavors. However, following Christopher Tolkien’s passing in 2020, the climate appears to have shifted.

“The next generation is far more open to dialogue,” Jackson explained to Deadline. He and the team at Warner Bros. are currently engaging with the younger stewards of the estate to discuss the potential licensing of other works. The goal, he hinted, is to secure rights to material that offers more narrative depth than what has been available through the appendices alone.

While this might be interpreted as a subtle dig at Amazon’s The Rings of Power, it is undeniably a hopeful development for fans. The prospect of finally seeing an adaptation of The Silmarillion or other foundational stories remains the holy grail for enthusiasts. Although these conversations are in their infancy, the possibility of a return to the roots of Middle-earth has never felt more tangible.
