Will Ferrell’s highly anticipated return to the Saturday Night Live stage took an unexpected turn as the comedy icon found his monologue hijacked by two heavyweights of the music world: Paul McCartney and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.
The surprises began when Smith stepped into the spotlight, perfectly mimicking Ferrell. The bit serves as a hilarious nod to the long-running joke that the two share a striking physical resemblance—a rivalry that famously culminated in a lighthearted, viral drum-off hosted by Jimmy Fallon over a decade ago.
For the Season 51 finale, the real Chad Smith seized the moment, taking the stage under the guise of the evening’s host. “I’m thrilled to be back here hosting Saturday Night Live. Thrilled!” Smith declared, leaning fully into his role as Ferrell’s comedic doppelgänger.
The charade was short-lived, however, as the actual Will Ferrell strode out to confront his lookalike. “Hey! Excuse me! What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Ferrell demanded, before jokingly warning the audience, “Don’t clap for him. He’s a bad guy.”
Attempting to regain control of the monologue, Ferrell turned to the audience for questions, only to be interrupted again—this time by Paul McCartney. The legendary Beatle kept the bit alive, playfully insisting that it was Ferrell who was actually the rock drummer. McCartney eventually commanded the stage, basking in the audience’s cheers while playfully ribbing Ferrell for omitting “Penny Lane” from his list of accolades and firmly instructing the host to take his place behind the drum kit.
You can catch the full, chaotic monologue below, along with McCartney’s standout performances from the evening, including renditions of “Days We Left Behind,” “Band on the Run,” and “Coming Up.”
