Path of Exile 2’s ‘Return of the Ancients’ Update Overhauls the Endgame

Grinding Gear Games has officially pulled back the curtain on Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5, titled “Return of the Ancients,” which arrives on May 29. Touted by the studio as their most ambitious update to date, this patch delivers a comprehensive overhaul of the endgame. By introducing a wealth of new bosses, unique items, and fresh activities, the developers are directly addressing the need for a more structured and rewarding finale to the player journey.

The centerpiece of this expansion is the addition of five distinct narrative arcs. Players will delve into mist-shrouded territories to confront Tangmazu, the Raven Trickster; fight alongside the Keepers of the Flame monks; liberate a captive spirit from the King in the Mist; provide support to the Atlas Masters; and even embark on maritime explorations to locate Rog's missing spouse. Each of these storylines integrates mechanics from previous leagues while debuting an innovative crafting system.

Beyond retrofitting established mechanics, this update introduces the "Runes of Aldur" league, featuring a deep, rune-based crafting progression. Furthermore, the roster expands with two new ascendancies—the Spirit Walker and the Martial Artist—serving as the core pillars of the "Return of the Ancients" experience.

Since entering early access in December 2024, Path of Exile 2 has undergone iterative growth. Despite these enhancements, the fundamental gameplay loop—creating a character, navigating the campaign chapters, and tackling the endgame—has remained largely static. Currently, the endgame is dominated by "waystone" map progression, where players grind through dungeons to face bosses and encounter randomized activities, often feeling more like a repetitive cycle than a cohesive challenge.

Game director Jonathan Rogers acknowledges that this lack of a clear "conclusion" to the endgame has hindered the player experience. During an online briefing, he noted that many negative reviews stem from players reaching a burnout point because the game lacks a distinct endpoint, causing them to grind until they lose interest.

By implementing these structured storylines, the team aims to offer a satisfying, high-quality conclusion that allows players to feel a sense of completion. According to Rogers, the goal is for players to feel genuinely satisfied with their progression, granting them the freedom to step away on a high note before the experience turns monotonous.

"We want to ensure there is a point where you feel you’ve accomplished your goals," Rogers explained. "It’s about feeling happy with your experience and knowing you can move on before the next league begins." Ultimately, "Return of the Ancients" realizes the developer’s long-term vision, transforming the endgame from a series of random encounters into a purposeful exploration of the game's world.
