Overwatch’s Newest Hero, Shion, Has Already Redefined Gameplay With Her Action-Packed Kit

Shion, the new gangster-inspired operative in Overwatch, is absolutely dismantling me. I had a clear picture of her playstyle after watching producer Kenny Hudson demonstrate her kit at a preview event. As someone who has mained flankers all year, I felt confident—she seemed like a slightly more fragile version of Vendetta. I figured I had this in the bag.

Spoiler alert: I most certainly do not have this in the bag. My weapon accuracy has plummeted to record lows, and I’m finding myself back at the spawn point twice as often as usual.

Shion has become my personal Achilles' heel. I’m comfortable with movement-based heroes; I know how to dictate the tempo of an engagement as Vendetta, and I rarely find myself outplayed by other Sierra mains. I can handle long-range precision, too—at least, I could when I was maining Ashe. I’m even reasonably effective with Cassidy and Sojourn (though with Sojourn, let's be honest: spraying enough lead into a room will eventually yield results).

However, forcing myself to balance high-mobility aggression with pinpoint accuracy is proving to be a hurdle my brain just hasn't cleared yet. Shion demands both simultaneously, and she’s testing my limits.

Her technical kit includes:

Primary Fire: A close-to-mid-range weapon that suffers from significant damage fall-off at distance.

Secondary Fire (Execution): An X-shaped bullet spread that becomes more focused the longer you charge the shot.

Mobility: A sideways dash that grants a burst of short-lived overhealth.

Motorcycle: A deployable ability where she rides a bike, which detonates after a brief delay.

Ultimate: A series of high-speed dashes followed by lethal strike or burst attacks.

The first time I deployed her Ultimate outside of the training grounds, I simply dashed face-first into a wall, whiffed my entire combo, and was immediately flattened by an enemy D.Va. It was humbling, to say the least.

Shion doesn't play like a typical flanker. Aside from the bike explosion, she demands exceptional mechanical precision. Her reliance on proximity and aim makes her play more like a specialist—think Emre or Soldier: 76—but she lacks their inherent survivability or wide-area utility. The core loop remains standard for a flanker—strike fast, maximize output, and escape—but there is zero room for error. It’s an unforgiving kit that perfectly mirrors her persona, even if it is currently wrecking my win rate.

That said, I’m committed to mastering her. Improving with a new hero is the best part of the Overwatch experience, and even as I stumble through matches, I’m genuinely enjoying the learning curve. I’m already identifying areas for improvement, like utilizing the Execution secondary fire more liberally—even without a full charge—to chip away at health pools. I also need to stop treating my motorcycle like a projectile; saving it for a strategic exit is far smarter than using it as a clumsy opener.

Beyond tactics, it’s just a matter of sharpening my aim. That takes time, and with Season 3’s launch, finding a slot to play as her is tough—everyone is fighting to lock in Shion, and the Damage queue times are reflecting that popularity. I’m hopeful that the Arcade mode will grant me more time on the Neon Junction map; its intricate, labyrinthine design feels custom-built for her verticality and flanking potential.

Overwatch Season 3 is officially live, featuring a fresh slate of skins and a Shion-themed lore event packed with loot-filled rewards.
