With the May 5 release of Platform Decay, the eighth entry in Martha Wells’ acclaimed Murderbot Diaries, fans are naturally curious about what comes next for the series’ famously grumpy, cynical android. Wells admitted to Polygon that she has barely begun plotting a ninth book—and indeed, it might serve as the finale for the long-running, award-winning saga.

“Currently, I only have one more Murderbot book under contract,” Wells explained. “I plan to dive into that once I wrap up the third entry in the Witch King series. It will likely be the end of the year before I even start. I have some nebulous concepts, but nothing concrete—and there is a strong possibility that it will be the final chapter.”

The series, alongside its Apple TV television adaptation, follows a rogue SecUnit—a biomechanical entity designed for corporate security that hacked its own control module to achieve self-awareness. Dubbed “Murderbot,” the protagonist is a fan favorite, largely due to its desire to avoid human conflict and spend its time consuming media, making it an iconic figure for many queer and neurodivergent readers who resonate with its struggle to navigate human social dynamics.

In Platform Decay, our protagonist utilizes a new “mental health module” to better process its emotions while attempting a daring rescue mission on a sprawling corporate torus. Wells notes that the character has evolved significantly, achieving a level of emotional equilibrium that suggests the narrative arc may be reaching a natural close.

“I’ve taken Murderbot on quite a journey,” Wells shared. “In Platform Decay, you can really see that it’s in a good place mentally compared to earlier installments like Network Effect or System Collapse.”

Wells maintains that she doesn’t approach the series with a rigid grand design. Instead, the story explores the inherent instability of a corporate-dominated galaxy. “There won’t be a neat, clean conclusion where every problem is solved. In this corporate hellscape, there’s always another entity waiting to fill the void.”

Regarding the broader state of the galaxy, Wells sees the cracks forming. “The corporations are spiraling under their own greed. You see the system starting to eat itself through factionalized violence. The Corporation Rim likely won’t survive its own internal dysfunction, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I want to write a story centered on the downfall of the system itself.”

“I don’t have a climactic confrontation planned between Murderbot and the corporate overlords; that isn’t the heart of these books,” she says. “It feels like we are reaching the end of what is interesting for the audience to follow regarding Murderbot’s journey.”

While the new book teases larger movements in the background—such as other liberated SecUnits seeking their own paths—Wells remains hesitant to commit to any spin-offs. “I’m terrible at planning ahead,” she says with a laugh. “I’m fortunate that my publisher trusts my process. What happens next depends entirely on where the ideas lead me.”
