Olivia Rodrigo revealed in a cover story for The Hollywood Reporter published Wednesday (Oct. 7) that she spent an exorbitant amount of money to buy Meg White’s vintage white Gunne Sax dress worn on the cover of The White Stripes album Elephant.

The 2003 album reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200. Records from Julien’s Auctions indicate that the same garment sold for $25,600 during a “Music Icons” sale in May.

“Maybe if I do Daisy Chain in the winter, I can wear it,” Rodrigo told the publication. She explained that she had wanted to debut the outfit during her set at her inaugural charity festival in August, but it was too hot.

Rodrigo previously ran a social media fan page for The White Stripes and included Jack White’s biggest fan in her Instagram bio during childhood. She met Jack White for the first time in 2022 and posted on Instagram at the time that she met her hero of all heroes and was still crying.

The two have stayed in touch. Rodrigo performed “We’re Going to Be Friends” alongside Feist at the 2025 ceremony to help induct The White Stripes into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In April, she shared that Jack left her a note backstage at 30 Rock that read “Kill it kid” before her first time hosting Saturday Night Live.

“I love Jack White. He’s, like, my hero,” Rodrigo told Jimmy Fallon while discussing the note. “He’s the coolest guy ever. Wonderful person. Always stands up for what’s right … He sent me a text and he’s like, ‘Look up!’ Like, ‘Keep your head up. You’re gonna find something.’”

“She’s very cool, very real and very much a lover of music,” Jack White said about Rodrigo in 2022. “She’s also introducing another set of youth to the love of vinyl records as well. Respect.”
