If you have been eagerly waiting for new music from Olivia Rodrigo, your patience is about to be rewarded. Ahead of the release of her highly anticipated album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, the pop sensation revealed on Tuesday, May 19, that a brand-new single titled “The Cure” is officially on the way.
Rodrigo took to Instagram to tease the project, sharing what appears to be the single’s cover art. The image features a stylized shot of the star wearing a pink top, her hands intertwined in a complex red cat’s cradle string formation that reveals the song’s title. The Grammy-winning artist shared her enthusiasm with fans, calling “The Cure” one of her most cherished tracks she has ever created.
“I couldn’t be more excited for you all to hear it,” she wrote. The song is scheduled to arrive this Friday, May 22—a fittingly thematic release date, as it marks World Goth Day.
The title “The Cure” may serve as a subtle homage to the legendary goth-rock band led by Robert Smith. The connection between the two artists is well-documented; Rodrigo has long cited the band as a major influence, and the admiration is clearly reciprocal. Smith has publicly praised her songwriting in the past and even made a memorable guest appearance during her set at Glastonbury last year.
Rodrigo previously hinted at her appreciation for the band on the lead single from her upcoming record, “Drop Dead,” which soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. In that track, she weaves in a lyrical nod to the band’s 1987 classic “Just Like Heaven,” singing, “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven,’ and I know why he wrote them, now that you’re standing right here.”
Fans can look forward to the full arrival of You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love on June 12. In the meantime, check out her official announcement for “The Cure” below.
