Olivia Rodrigo continues to be vocal about her strong opposition to the mass deportations and aggressive enforcement tactics currently being deployed by ICE under the Trump administration.
In a candid cover story for Dazed published this Thursday (June 4), the chart-topping singer emphasized that she views artistic expression as a vehicle for advocacy. While she humbly noted that she lacks a degree in political science, she insisted that staying informed on current events is essential. “I’m not the most knowledgeable person on the planet, but I strive to remain engaged and share my perspective,” she stated.
The conversation turned toward a controversy from last year, when the Department of Homeland Security utilized her track “All-American Bitch” as the backing audio for a social media post celebrating ICE operations. Describing the moment she discovered the video, Rodrigo admitted she was profoundly unsettled: “I was just scrolling through my feed. Encountering that kind of propaganda was deeply disturbing, and realizing my own music was being weaponized to amplify it left me absolutely livid.”
This incident prompted her swift public rebuttal in November, where she explicitly demanded that her artistry not be used to bolster what she characterized as “racist, hateful propaganda.”
Despite the backlash from federal officials—who suggested she show appreciation for their “sacrifice” rather than belittle their efforts—the singer remains unwavering in her stance. “The actions being taken are profoundly cruel and barbaric,” Rodrigo told Dazed. “It breaks my heart to live in a nation that seems to accept such practices as standard.”
When asked for comment regarding these latest remarks, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security reiterated their position: “The American public remains deeply appreciative of the federal officers working to ensure our safety. We suggest Ms. Rodrigo reflect on their service rather than disparage their commitment.”
This interview drops just over a week before the Grammy winner releases her third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, on June 12. Preceding the album, her latest singles “Drop Dead” and “The Cure” have already made significant waves, securing the No. 1 and No. 5 spots on the Billboard Hot 100.
