Obsession Continues to Shatter Box Office Records as It Approaches Next Major Milestone

One of the year’s most startling cinematic triumphs continues to dominate the box office. Obsession is rapidly approaching the $300 million mark globally, a staggering feat that yields a return over 400 times its modest $750,000 production budget. Reports of the film industry’s demise appear to have been vastly premature.

This year marks a definitive shift in theatrical trends, with Gen Z-driven horror titles shattering records while legacy franchises falter. Obsession is the brainchild of 26-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker, who transitioned from a successful YouTube career to his feature-length directorial debut, Milk & Serial, in 2024.

After its 2025 Toronto International Film Festival premiere, Focus Features acquired Obsession for approximately $14 million. Following its May 15 wide release, the film became a viral phenomenon among younger demographics, maintaining a top-two domestic box office position for an entire month. It now stands as the highest-grossing film in Focus Features’ history and currently ranks as the fifth-most lucrative domestic release of 2026, easily outpacing blockbusters with significantly larger price tags.

Alongside other low-budget, Gen Z-led hits like Backrooms—which has pulled in over $250 million—it is increasingly clear that modern audiences are eager to support original storytelling tailored to their tastes. Conversely, aging franchises like Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Masters of the Universe have struggled to captivate viewers with the same fervor.

Barker’s schedule is packed with upcoming ventures. In April, A24 confirmed he would be helming a reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Furthermore, Universal Pictures recently revealed that Barker will write, produce, and direct an original project in collaboration with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Spooky Pictures.

If that were not enough, Barker’s next feature, Anything But Ghosts—starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul, and Violet McGraw—is already in post-production. This supernatural story follows two amateur paranormal investigators who find themselves entangled in a genuine haunting. Distributed by Focus, the film is confirmed to exist within the same cinematic universe as Obsession. While the broader film industry navigates a volatile landscape, Barker’s success serves as a powerful reminder that compelling, original vision still carries immense weight at the box office.
