Nioh 3 launches on February 6, 2026. Developers have revealed new information: the game will be more approachable for newcomers, aimed at enthusiasts of Japanese history, while retaining the series’ trademark difficulty.
Producer Fumihiko Yasuda confirmed in an interview that Nioh 3 is set in an open world. The team drew on lessons from the past six years, and the changes to the world’s structure are intended to make the experience more accessible for new players.
Although the project remains hardcore, the developers are easing sudden difficulty spikes. The map is built as an “open-field” layout.
We wanted the world to be open, but not so wide that players would lose their way. It was essential to strike a balance in freedom of exploration—neither too much nor too little. The action needed to remain the game’s core, and the tension had to persist even as exploration grew. That balance led us to adopt an open-field approach.
A comprehensive but uncluttered tutorial has been prepared for newcomers, yet enemies will still present a stern challenge.
Exploring the world grants greater freedom, yet formidable foes await on the battlefield. We’ve focused on equipping players with more tools—expanded gear and exploration options—while maintaining the signature difficulty that defines our games.
