Nintendo’s Original US Pokémon Presentation is a Nostalgia Trip Revealing the Roots of the Franchise’s Success

Long before The Game Awards claimed the title of the video game industry’s Oscars, E3 reigned supreme as the definitive gaming showcase held annually from 1995 to 2019. It served as the premier stage for developers to unveil their latest creations and captivate both industry insiders and everyday players alike. Enthusiasts eagerly awaited their favorite publisher’s showcase, anticipating major announcements, fresh trailers, and exclusive gameplay footage for upcoming titles.

Nintendo was a fixture at E3 from its inception, hosting some of the most anticipated panels where fans knew they would receive updates on legendary franchises like Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Pokémon wasn’t part of these early lineups, however, as the series remained a strictly Japanese phenomenon during its infancy. That all changed in May 1998, when the franchise made its official U.S. debut during a landmark E3 presentation. The Video Game History Foundation has since resurfaced archival footage from these early conferences, including Nintendo introducing the Pokémon anime and video games to Western audiences.
