Nintendo Seeks $4.5M From Reddit Moderator Over Piracy

Nintendo has once again drawn attention for its crackdown on piracy. This time the Japanese company has filed a lawsuit against a Reddit moderator, alleging they ran or aided websites that distributed unauthorized games for the Nintendo Switch.

The complaint seeks $4.5 million in damages, asserting that the moderator, known online as Archbox, actively participated in the unauthorized copying and distribution of hundreds — possibly thousands — of copyrighted titles.

The dispute escalated after an initial formal notice: Nintendo says Archbox refused to halt their activities, prompting the company to take legal action. Court filings indicate the moderator did not file a response to the complaint, which has strengthened Nintendo’s position and opened the door to potentially severe penalties.

Nintendo alleges channels associated with Archbox circulated hundreds of thousands of pirated game copies, causing significant financial harm. The lawsuit is part of Nintendo’s broader, aggressive approach to protecting its intellectual property; the company has previously pursued multimillion-dollar recoveries in piracy cases.

The case is still at an early stage and no final judgment has been issued, but the message is unmistakable: piracy is viewed by Nintendo as a direct attack on the industry, and any unlawful distribution of its games will be met with rigorous enforcement.
