During his tenure as a member of One Direction, Niall Horan witnessed plenty of extraordinary spectacles, but few experiences matched the surreal nature of performing for the Obama family—and the extensive security apparatus that accompanied them.
“I have immense admiration for Michelle Obama,” Horan shared during a recent appearance on The Capital Evening Show With Jimmy Hill. “I’ve crossed paths with her several times. Back in the 1D era, she would often bring Malia and Sasha to our performances in Washington, D.C.”
The Irish singer-songwriter noted that the First Family’s attendance was a massive logistical feat. “It was a significant operation. The Secret Service were out in full force, and they were stationed throughout the entire arena,” he recalled.
“I would look out from the stage and see agents everywhere, maintaining a watchful eye,” Horan added. “But Michelle was lovely—exceptionally intelligent and possessed a great sense of humor.”
In those moments, Malia and Sasha Obama were able to step out of the political spotlight and enjoy themselves like any other teenagers cheering for their favorite heartthrobs. One Direction brought their global phenomenon to the U.S. capital twice: first in 2013 during the Take Me Home Tour and again in 2014 for the Where We Are Tour.
It has been nearly a decade since the group began their indefinite hiatus in 2016, a move that allowed all five members to pursue independent creative paths. While the industry continues to mourn Liam Payne, who remained active in music until his passing in 2024, Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik have all continued to thrive, with several high-profile releases scheduled for this year.
Horan’s highly anticipated new full-length project, titled Dinner Party, is slated for release on June 5. The artist has been open about how his long-term relationship with Amelia Woolley served as the primary muse for the album, which takes its name from the night they first met.
“I eventually realized that that specific dinner party was far more significant than just a casual evening of food and drinks,” Horan explained to Capital Breakfast in March. “It essentially defined the next six years of my life and, hopefully, the rest of it. It provided the foundation for me to write songs that chronicle all the various chapters of our relationship.”
