Naughty Dog Developing Two The Last of Us Projects
Naughty Dog observed The Last of Us Day this past Monday with a lineup of festivities, highlighted by Clicker-inspired gear for Ghost of Yōtei, alongside complimentary PlayStation avatars and discounted PC editions of both franchise entries. To cap off the celebration, studio head Neil Druckmann addressed the community to confirm that multiple The Last of Us endeavors are currently in development, though he kept specific details under wraps.
“We have a couple of very exciting new projects in very early stages,” Druckmann stated. Naturally, he refrained from elaborating further—a standard practice for high-budget game production. “I will tell you that both projects will expand the canon of The Last of Us beyond Part 1 and Part 2.”
Still no word about a potential Part 3
Given Druckmann’s seasoned background in the industry, his statements offered little tangible substance; promising to “expand the canon” remains broad enough to encompass virtually any direction. “The world of The Last of Us means a great deal to us, and we wouldn’t return to it unless we had something meaningful to say. We believe these stories are worth telling,” Druckmann expressed.
While the prospect of two fresh narratives in this universe is undeniably thrilling, enthusiasts have valid reasons to temper their expectations. Naughty Dog famously spent years pouring resources into a standalone multiplayer project within the same universe before ultimately canceling it. Consequently, there are no guarantees these conceptual titles will ever reach consumer hands.
Naughty Dog delivers an official status report on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
These atmospheric endeavors represent only a fraction of Naughty Dog’s current production slate. Their primary focus remains directed toward Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, an IP initially unveiled during the 2024 Game Awards. Druckmann noted that the entire development team is operating in “heads down” mode on the project, positioning it to become the studio’s “most ambitious game yet.”
Consequently, audiences should not anticipate immediate updates, as the team intends to maintain strict confidentiality for the remainder of 2026. “In 2027, that changes. We’ll fully reveal Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and give you a proper look at Jordan’s wild sci-fi adventure.”
Taking these comments at face value suggests that a fresh cinematic showcase for Intergalactic will likely skip this year’s upcoming Game Awards ceremony. Given that Sony traditionally hosts its State of Play broadcasts during February and June, a major reveal next year via one of those digital showcases remains a strong possibility.
