Following the long-standing tradition of the series, Monster Hunter Wilds is set to receive a substantial expansion, as unveiled during yesterday’s Summer Game Fest. Titled Ascendance, the reveal sparked immediate curiosity, which Capcom promptly addressed through a developer briefing that also confirmed the title is currently in production for the upcoming Switch 2 console.
The developer update features producer Ryozo Tsujimoto in conversation with director Takuro Hiraoka. Hiraoka, taking the reins from Yuya Tokuda, brings extensive franchise experience, having served as lead game designer on both Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate and Iceborne. The duo clarified that the title Ascendance serves a dual purpose: representing both a literal elevation in geography and a significant advancement in gameplay mechanics.
The expansion introduces an expansive new biome, “The Skybound Eyrie,” a breathtaking collection of floating ruins. Players will utilize their Seikrets to navigate this vertical playground, catching updrafts to glide between the soaring islands. Hiraoka teased that this region will feature exclusive environmental hazards and mechanics unique to its high-altitude landscape.
Combat is also receiving a shake-up via the “Boost Bracer,” a versatile new tool designed to augment weapon mobility, combo speed, and overall offensive pressure. Beyond this device, players can expect a suite of new combat maneuvers tailored to keep the action fresh. The developer team also highlighted a new avian monster species that hunts in synchronized V-formations, while confirming the return of the iconic Elder Dragon, Kushala Daora. Mysterious silhouettes, potentially hinting at the return of Lao-Shan Lung, further suggest that Ascendance will place a heavy focus on high-stakes Elder Dragon encounters when it launches in 2027.
In a surprising final reveal, Capcom confirmed that Monster Hunter Wilds is officially in development for the Switch 2. While details regarding a release window or potential parity with the Ascendance expansion remain under wraps, the team promised further updates as development progresses.
