While Mattel Studios retains the autonomy to independently produce a brand-new iteration once the current arrangement lapses, any future film would remain entirely disconnected from Warner Bros.' acclaimed cinematic universe. Company executives are understandably desperate to avert this scenario—particularly given the urgent need for reliable box-office powerhouses <a href="https://www.polygon.com/supergirl-flops-opening-weekend/" target="_blank">following the disappointing theatrical run of <em>Supergirl</em></a>. As things stand, however, a breakthrough appears distant.

Pictures co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy shared a joint statement with The New York Times: "We have a rights deal with Mattel in place and have made a series of lucrative proposals to secure the next ‘<em>Barbie</em>’ installment. Unfortunately, we have been unable to reach an agreement thus far." Meanwhile, representatives for the studio have pointed fingers at the sluggish communication from the respective talent agencies representing Gerwig, Robbie, and Gosling.
