Mina the Hollower, the latest 8-bit action-platformer from Yacht Club Games—the studio behind the legendary Shovel Knight—has enjoyed a stellar debut. Since its release on May 29, the title has moved an impressive 300,000 units in just three days. This milestone arrives as a massive relief for the developer; leading up to the launch, Yacht Club candidly revealed to Bloomberg Businessweek that the project was a definitive “make or break” endeavor. After six years of development, the studio had been forced to put other creative ventures on hold while depleting significant cash reserves to see the game through to completion.
In a recent conversation with Bloomberg, Yacht Club co-founder and director Sean Velasco expressed his delight at the game’s warm critical reception. He confirmed that these robust initial sales ensure the studio can remain independent, avoiding the need for outside investment or painful staff reductions for the time being. While the 15-person team is currently sustained by the success of Mina the Hollower, Velasco is setting his sights even higher.
“It’s curious that the highest-rated game of 2026 isn’t also the fastest-selling,” Velasco noted, clearly driven to bridge that gap. Given that Mina the Hollower currently sits at the top of the 2026 charts on Metacritic, the ambition to match its critical acclaim with even wider commercial success is understandable.
Ultimately, it is heartening to see such a dedicated project secure both critical prestige and the financial stability necessary to protect the studio’s creative future.
