Matt Reeves Is Bringing the Riddler Back to Gotham

In Matt Reeves’ 2022 noir-inspired The Batman, the Riddler took center stage as a chilling, serial-killer-esque antagonist, forcing the Dark Knight to sharpen his investigative instincts. While that film successfully launched a gritty spinoff revolving around the Penguin, fans continue to speculate on which rogue will emerge to terrorize Gotham in the upcoming The Batman Part 2. Interestingly, the Riddler has once again found himself in the limelight, this time for an entirely different project under Reeves’ purview.

Reeves serves as an executive producer on Prime Video’s Batman: Caped Crusader, a creative collaboration featuring industry titans J.J. Abrams and Bruce Timm. Unveiled at the June 24 Annecy Festival, the trailer for the show’s second season positions the Riddler as the primary threat. Here, Edward Nygma is reimagined as a ruthless mob boss desperate to dismantle the Batman and seize control of the city, seemingly bolstered by an alliance with a lethal-looking Poison Ivy.

Showrunners Bruce Timm and James Tucker continue to deconstruct the Batman mythos with bold reinterpretations, having already gender-swapped the Penguin and completely overhauled Harley Quinn’s origin story. The second season promises further creative risks, featuring new takes on iconic foes like Firefly, Man-Bat, and Solomon Grundy. Perhaps most intriguing is the reimagined Mad Hatter, who now serves as a television host weaponizing public opinion against the Caped Crusader—a clever subversion of his classic brainwashing tactics.

Harley Quinn makes a return to challenge the hero’s sanity, and the Joker—who offered a brief, eerie glimpse in the first season—is poised to reveal his true, twisted nature. A newly released promotional still shows the Clown Prince of Crime lurking in a high-end apartment, looming over a victim trapped in a permanent, toxin-induced grin.

The entire second season of Batman: Caped Crusader premieres on Prime Video on July 31.
