Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, Founding Guitarist of Black Midi, Dies at 26

Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, a co-founding guitarist of the influential British experimental rock group Black Midi, has passed away at the age of 26. His family confirmed the news, noting that he died following a prolonged struggle with his mental health.

The announcement was released on Monday, January 12, through the band’s label, Rough Trade Records. In a poignant statement, his family remembered him as a “gifted musician and a kind, compassionate man” who eventually succumbed to his illness despite extensive support. “He will forever be loved,” the family shared. “We urge everyone to reach out to their loved ones in hopes of preventing such heartbreak for other young men.”

Rough Trade Records also issued a tribute, expressing their “heartfelt sympathy to the Kwasniewski-Kelvin family” and describing the guitarist as an “extraordinarily talented individual who will be profoundly missed.”

Black Midi emerged as a vital force in the London music scene in 2019, gaining a reputation for their frantic, technical live shows at venues like Windmill Brixton. Alongside bandmates Geordie Greep, Cameron Picton, and Morgan Simpson, Kwasniewski-Kelvin helped generate such significant buzz that the group embarked on major tours across Europe and the United States before their debut album even hit shelves.

That debut, Schlagenheim, was released in July 2019 to critical acclaim. While the band’s success continued with Cavalcade (2021) and Hellfire (2022)—the latter of which peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Top Alternative Albums chart—Kwasniewski-Kelvin had already stepped away from the spotlight. He departed the group after their first record, explaining at the time that he needed to prioritize his mental well-being.

Following a final global tour in 2023 that spanned Asia, Europe, and Latin America, Black Midi officially disbanded in 2024.
