Marathon is not “Concord 3.0”: Sony’s new game has outsold Resident Evil Requiem
The development of Marathon reportedly cost Sony Interactive Entertainment approximately $250 million. Combined with the nearly $4 billion acquisition of Bungie a few years prior, the stakes for this launch are incredibly high: industry analysts are watching closely to see if the massive investment will finally yield a significant return.
At the moment, the signs are encouraging. Early fears that Marathon might become another “Concord 3.0” or a niche title like Highguard have been largely dispelled. Despite initial skepticism, recent playtests have successfully showcased the game’s high quality to the public. Demand has been so intense that pre-orders and launch-day sales propelled the title past Resident Evil Requiem on the Steam best-sellers list.
Player engagement peaked on March 6 with 88,337 concurrent users. The game currently holds a solid 84% approval rating based on more than 400 reviews, though these figures are expected to fluctuate as the community grows over the weekend.
Marathon officially launched on March 5, 2026, with a simultaneous release across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. To mark the occasion, a new narrative trailer was released, featuring an atmospheric score composed by Ryan Lott and Son Lux.
