Mandy Moore is finally breaking her silence regarding the “toxic” social circle drama that made headlines earlier this year. The controversy ignited after Ashley Tisdale penned an essay that seemingly criticized the This Is Us star and her inner circle of friends.
During a conversation on the Monday, May 18 episode of SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live, Moore reflected on how surreal it felt to have her private life scrutinized so publicly. She was referencing Tisdale’s January piece for The Cut, in which the High School Musical alum expressed feeling consistently excluded by her peer group of celebrity mothers. It didn’t take long for eagle-eyed fans to deduce that the group in question included high-profile stars like Moore, Hilary Duff, and Meghan Trainor.
“I know Hilary has touched on this as well,” the Tangled actress noted. “We’ve both grown up in the spotlight and are accustomed to having our choices dissected, but this felt entirely different—and significantly more distressing.”
Moore—a veteran artist with two Billboard Hot 100 hits—explained that Tisdale’s public claims struck a deep chord. “Maintaining a reputation for kindness is paramount to me, as is the integrity of the company I keep,” she shared. “To have that legacy questioned, or to have people imply otherwise, was deeply upsetting.”
She further reflected on her approach to conflict, adding, “I generally shy away from confrontation, but when something truly matters, I believe in addressing it head-on. It’s not always easy, but it’s the necessary route. I simply feel I would have handled things very differently.”
Moore is not the only one to address the essay. In April, Meghan Trainor told Us Weekly that she felt genuine sympathy for everyone involved, noting that she felt “bad” for the other mothers and for the sadness Tisdale expressed, chalking the ordeal up to “miscommunication and confusion.”
Conversely, Hilary Duff expressed more pointed frustration. Speaking on Call Her Daddy in February, she remarked, “It’s difficult to read falsehoods, especially when they impact six different women and their families. The timing was unfortunate, and to be honest, I felt used.”
Mandy Moore’s most recent musical offering was her 2022 album, In Real Life. Fans can look forward to seeing her latest acting performance when The Breadwinner arrives in theaters on May 29.
