Magic Just Brought Back Its Deadliest Mechanic as a Commander

The Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes expansion is proving to be a significantly more daring endeavor than many anticipated, especially when stacked against last year’s Spider-Man release. One standout card, in particular, is already turning heads and stirring up trouble for anyone sitting across the table. Back in May, lead designer Mark Rosewater teased the return of poison counters, and now that the card in question has been revealed, it’s proving to be even more formidable than players feared.

The Serpent Society is a three-mana legendary creature (requiring one green, one black, and one colorless) boasting a solid 3/4 stat line. Beyond its deathtouch ability, it features a brutal Ward cost: opponents must swallow five poison counters just to target it. Its true malice, however, lies in its triggered ability: whenever another creature you control with deathtouch perishes, every opponent is forced to sacrifice a non-token creature of their choosing.

Poison counters, a mechanic introduced in the 1994 Legends set, bypass standard life totals entirely. If a player accumulates 10, they are out of the game instantly. While this was historically potent, it becomes truly nightmarish in the Commander format, where players start with 40 life—a massive buffer that becomes irrelevant against this strategy. If The Serpent Society serves as your commander, your opponents are essentially on a two-strike clock, making interaction with this card a risky, potentially game-ending endeavor.

What makes this card truly terrifying is the synergy it enjoys with Golgari (green/black) archetypes, which are flush with deathtouch support. Staples like Basilisk Collar grant life-gaining efficiency, while the Bow of Nylea and Ohran Frostfang can weaponize your entire board. Furthermore, the Vorpal Sword offers a late-game win condition, and including Fynn, the Fangbearer turns a modest creature swarm into an immediate existential crisis for your foes.

For those currently running an Atraxa, Praetor’s Voice Commander build, The Serpent Society is an absolute essential. Beyond taking advantage of Atraxa’s signature proliferate ability to tick those poison counters up, the added layer of forcing creature sacrifices provides a robust defense that turns a routine removal spell into a massive board-state disadvantage for the attacker.

If you’re a fan of the proliferate mechanic, this card will undoubtedly anchor your next deck. Just don’t blame us for the inevitable loss of your friendships at the table.

Whatever your preferred playstyle, the sheer utility offered by The Serpent Society is impossible to ignore. As someone who just finished optimizing an Atraxa build, I’m already looking at my list to see what I can cut to make room for this devious addition.
