Mafia’s Most Iconic Villain Officially Returns in Brand-New DLC

On August 14, Mafia: The Old Country will expand its criminal underworld with the release of the Man of Honor DLC. Priced at $10, this narrative expansion integrates seamlessly into the main campaign, introducing two fresh story chapters centered on the iconic series antagonist, Ennio Salieri, while also bolstering the Free Ride mode with new activities.

Launched last August, Mafia: The Old Country transported developer Hangar 13’s celebrated crime franchise to the rugged landscape of early 20th-century Sicily. While it featured subtle nods to previous entries, it served as a distinct prequel, chronicling the journey of Enzo Favara, a young laborer ascending through the ranks of a local mob family. In an interview with Polygon, franchise game director Alex Cox and associate design director Josh Zammit shared how Man of Honor acts as a bridge between two eras, retroactively enriching the lore of the base game.

Set during a one-year time jump in 1905—shortly after Enzo is initiated into the Torrisi family—these new chapters offer a few hours of additional gameplay. Players will witness a pivotal encounter between Enzo and a young, pre-kingpin Salieri. This meeting provides a clever origin for Salieri’s eventual migration to America, subtly influencing Enzo’s own future aspirations in the base game.

“We explore the formative stories of Salieri’s life before he rose to power—details that will be entirely new to long-time fans,” Zammit told Polygon. “His obsession with reaching America is his primary motivation here. It serves as a catalyst for Enzo, planting a seed about his own potential path. We wanted to explore who initially sparked that vision of a ‘new life’ for him.”

Cox notes that Salieri serves as a sharp contrast to Enzo. While Enzo is a pragmatic laborer thrust into the mafia lifestyle, Salieri is more calculating and manipulative. This friction, further strained by Enzo’s friend Cesare Massaro, who views Salieri as an aspirational mentor, creates a rich layer of interpersonal tension.

“Cesare is enamored with Salieri; he’s the man Cesare wishes he could be,” Cox explained. “But as we know, Salieri is deeply flawed. Introducing this dynamic complicates the bond between Enzo and Cesare, creating an uncomfortable ‘three’s a crowd’ tension.”

Fitting Salieri into a prequel setting presented unique challenges for Hangar 13, particularly regarding established continuity. Interestingly, the team hadn’t planned for DLC until the success of The Old Country became apparent last September. To maintain consistency, the team opted to recast the character. While they utilized de-aged character models based on actor Glenn Taranto’s likeness, they brought in actor Andrew Russell to provide a younger, more brash vocal and motion-capture performance, reflecting the character’s pre-migration roots.

“He is roughly 25 years younger than what players expect, and he has a lot of growing up to do before he reaches that Don status.”

Beyond the narrative, Salieri will oversee new challenges within Free Ride mode. Players can undertake missions out of the Galante Warehouse, ranging from high-stakes races to targeted assassinations and retrieval quests involving rival factions. Furthermore, the team has taken fan feedback to heart, adding more interactive elements to shop locations across the map.

As a final touch, Cox hinted at a hidden bonus for the observant. Following a previous piece where a fan cooked a recipe found within the game, the developers confirmed they might have tucked another culinary secret into the new expansion.

“We might have slipped another recipe into this content pack,” teased Cox. “It’s worth poking around to see what you can uncover.”
