M. Night Shyamalan’s more than three-decade career as a filmmaker has brought him both critical acclaim and harsh backlash. He was once called a young Steven Spielberg for Out of This World, the third movie of his career. Meanwhile, his 2010 film The Last Airbender was widely considered a disaster, and critics called him the worst director in mainstream cinema.

Shyamalan’s 2013 sci-fi adventure After Earth was the latest in a string of poorly received films, following Lady in the Water, The Happening, and The Last Airbender. None of these earned a Rotten Tomatoes score above 30%. The odds were stacked against After Earth from the start. Despite earning $243.8 million at the box office against its $130 million production budget, it was quickly written off by critics as yet another Shyamalan failure. More than a decade after its release, After Earth is getting a second shot at redemption via streaming, and it is free to watch.

After Earth is a sci-fi adventure starring Will and Jaden Smith. They play a father and son who crash-land on a long-abandoned Earth and must fight to survive in its wild, hostile ecosystem. On paper, it sounds like a promising premise, but many viewers were disappointed by how little Will Smith appeared in the film. His character is injured in the crash early on, leaving the younger Smith to carry much of the story as he navigates the outside world. Most of Will Smith’s screen time is spent monitoring a computer console inside the ship and giving instructions to Jaden Smith’s character over the radio. It is a father-son tale of survival that was weighed down by the expectation that Will Smith would be the leading man.

Critics were brutal when reviewing After Earth. The Los Angeles Times wrote that “There is no small irony that this sci-fi action adventure is about surviving a serious crash. The scorched earth left behind by After Earth is sure to leave a scar on everyone involved.” With only a 12% score on the data aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, a chance at redemption is just what this Shyamalan film needs.

You can decide for yourself whether the film is worth watching, and it will not cost you anything. After Earth is now available on the free streaming platform Tubi.
