Lucasfilm Gave Shawn Levy Full Creative Freedom on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’
Sean Levy’s forthcoming film will stand alone as an original entry within the Star Wars universe.
Director Sean Levy discussed progress on his first film set in the Star Wars universe. On the podcast The Business he said that, contrary to expectations, he didn’t encounter the franchise’s usual raft of restrictions or a rigid “internal canon.”
According to Levy, Lucasfilm gave him a single directive: create something new.
“There were no mandates or interference — only a continual reminder: ‘Make something new.’ Every time I asked if we could use a character who’d already appeared in the saga, the answer was the same: ‘People have seen that. Come up with something different.’”
This stance afforded him a rare degree of near-complete creative freedom within a major Hollywood franchise. Levy co-wrote the screenplay with Jonathan Tropper, and the film will follow the exploits of original protagonists in an uncharted sector of the galaxy.
The leads are Ryan Gosling and young actor Flynn Gray. The cast also includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamel Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
The film is scheduled to premiere on May 28, 2027.
