A cornerstone of London’s underground music scene is returning to its roots. The Camden Assembly, formerly recognized by generations of fans as The Barfly, is officially reclaiming its iconic identity after nearly ten years under its current moniker.
This nostalgic revival follows the venue’s acquisition by Propaganda Independent Venues, spearheaded by co-founders Dan Ickowitz-Seidler and Richard Buck, alongside co-owner Chris McCormac.
The revitalized venue will host its grand reopening on June 22 with an intimate performance by British rock stalwart Frank Turner. Prospective attendees can register for tickets starting June 15 at 9:00 a.m. (BST) via the official Barfly website, with further updates available on the venue’s Instagram channel.
Situated on Chalk Farm Road, this intimate 200-capacity space has been a pillar of the London circuit since the 1980s. Originally known as The Monarch, it later gained legendary status as The Barfly in the early 2000s, serving as a launchpad for world-renowned acts including Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, The xx, and Ed Sheeran, who famously performed a four-night residency there.
Since its 2016 rebranding to Camden Assembly, the space has undergone several shifts. For the new ownership team, the decision to pivot back to the “Barfly” name is a strategic effort to honor the venue’s rich musical lineage.
“The Barfly holds a special place in our collective consciousness, and it is a privilege to start this next chapter,” said Ickowitz-Seidler. “Frank Turner is the quintessential artist to reignite the stage; he truly embodies the grit and spirit that this venue stands for.”
He continued, “We urge live music enthusiasts to support grassroots stages across the country. Many of today’s arena-fillers cut their teeth here. Our mission is to ensure that the next generation of festival headliners has a home to develop their craft.”
Future plans for the venue, as noted by Access All Areas, include a curated “Wall of Fame” celebrating historical milestones and a series of blue plaques honoring the artists who defined the venue’s legacy. Additionally, the space will introduce a dedicated vinyl listening bar, drawing inspiration from Tokyo’s sophisticated high-fidelity lounge culture.
